MANILA , Philippines – Since its launch in July 2008, the Supreme Court’s program crafted to increase poor detainees’ access to justice had facilitated the release of more than 1,000 inmates across the country. The 73 inmates from the Parañaque City jail who were ordered released on Saturday brings to 1,069 the number of detainees granted freedom through the High Court’s Enhanced Justice on Wheels (EJOW) program. The EJOW program, which uses a mobile court to hear the inmates’ cases, primarily aims to decongest jail houses and to respond to the gaps and roadblocks under the justice system that limit the less privileged from seeking redress from the courts. The Justice on Wheels program had earlier rolled out in Manila, Caloocan City, Quezon City, Las Piñas City, Pasay City, Cebu City, Aklan, Davao City, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Bacoor in Cavite, Tacloban City in Leyte, Zambales, Baler in Aurora Province , Sarangani, Tagaytay City, Trece Martirez City and Imus town in Cavite.
