February 18th - Crocodiles and Jail

It has been an amazing day starting with our trip with Danny and Louie to the Crocodile park where we not only saw croc's, but Trish and Marie held them, and a python, and everyone was treated to taste a bit of croc afterwards. We weren't sure if the spices or the croc was the reason, but it really did taste good - and no - not at all like chicken.

We then went to the all women Downtown Davao club where Ichie (Trish and my current host and the team leader of the outbound team to our district) is a member - and had a chance to give our presentation again. Many of the women were interested in talking to Trish and Ryan.

We left there and headed to see the jails. First the women's jail - which is a truly unique cottage set up where we were given a concert (future post will include a short video), a display of their dancing/exercise, and a tour.

From there we crossed to the men's jail, and photos will not come close to describing what I saw. 900 inmates, 74 total staff, the place was hot, crowded and yet surprisingly quiet. In both jails the MOST striking thing we learned was that people could and are placed in custody - often for many years if they have no attorney - WAITING for trials. Too many stories to write tonight - but it was almost incomprehensible.

Then we visited Boys Town, where 70-80 young boys, many orphans, are housed and do chores and learn values while going to school.

A short time shopping was followed by a social visit (no presentation) to the Davao 2000 club's evening meeting. This club, though small, was a riot! The DG was there to swear in an honorary Rotarian and they celebrated their 9th year as a club - but what will stick with me is the joy they had being together.

We had a long but really interesting day. Photos to follow tomorrow!!
